An insider has claimed that PS6 could have a 1TB SSD, which could help cut costs.
The PlayStation 6, Sony’s next console, hasn’t been officially revealed yet, but we have already received a lot of information about its specifications, release windows, and more from reports. Recently, we learned that the console won’t use the full RDNA 5 GPU architecture. Now, details about its storage have surfaced online.
PS6 Might Have a 1TB Gen5 SSD and Without a Disk Drive
The latest details about PS6’s SSD specifications come from a known insider, KeplerL2’s comments on Neogaf (via Wccftech). The leaker first spoke about the price of the next console, according to his current bill of materials (BOM) estimate: a PS6 unit costs $760, which can be reduced to $699 with “a reasonable subsidy,” the leaker stated. However, it is unknown whether Sony would opt for that, as Xbox “is not direct competition anymore”.
When asked whether the BOM was based on a 1TB or 2TB SSD, Kepler responded, “1TB Gen5 SSD and no Disk Drive.” The insider elaborated that this was “the most obvious area to cut costs.” He added that if the upcoming console’s SDK “supports neural texture compression, game sizes could even be smaller than PS5,” which would be a great feature if the console’s storage capacity remains the same as the previous generation.
In other news, a new report has corroborated that Sony is considering pushing the PS6 release to 2028 or 2029. Additionally, a tech leaker has claimed that the PlayStation 6 and PlayStation handheld will have substantial memory specs. What are your thoughts on PS6 featuring a 1TB SSD?
