Marvel Tokon Boasts a 10-Hour Story, But It’s Mostly Just ‘Motion Comics’

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is set to drop this August, bringing a highly anticipated fighting platform to the genre, backed by a thick roster of Marvel’s most iconic characters. In a recent interview, some juicy information about the upcoming fighting title was revealed, including a tidbit about the game’s story that has some prospective fans somewhat confused.

It was confirmed that Marvel Tokon will have a story mode that will last around 10 hours, but it’s mostly comprised of animated comic sequences with a few battles thrown into the mix.

Marvel Tokon’s Story Proves Divisive

In an interview captured by 4Gamer, Marvel Tokon’s producer, Takeshi Yamanaka, spoke about the game’s story mode. The team at Arc System Works has tried to approach the concept of a campaign somewhat differently, opting for a modern rendition of a moving comic strip, rather than a traditional interactive story mode.

In Yamanaka’s words, this has led to the creation of a 10-hour story broken up into episodes, but it’s almost entirely built around a ‘time-consuming’ comic and not a live-input gameplay mode.

He explained:

It’s difficult to directly compare the volume of content to the story modes in other titles because the format is different, but in Marvel Fighting Spirit, you can enjoy a story using a motion comics style in a game mode called Episode Mode. We had a manga artist draw the base manga, and then we added movement to each panel to advance the story, which is a fairly time-consuming way to present it.

We have prepared five teams, and it has enough content to provide nearly 10 hours of gameplay in total.

Yamanaka stated that the origin of the mode came from wanting to service casual players, and that the story mode was ‘absolutely necessary’ to tick that box. As Marvel is all about comics, the team felt this was the most natural way to proceed.

It was later stressed that there will be playable battles incorporated throughout the comic, and they’re inherently linked to how the story unravels, but they sound mostly supplementary at best.
