Ezio Auditore Returning in Assassin’s Creed Hexe, It’s Claimed

It has been claimed across a series of social media posts that Ezio Auditore, the legendary Assassin’s Creed character introduced in 2009’s Assassin’s Creed II, is set to return in the upcoming release of Hexe. This is set to be the darkest Assassin’s Creed title ever to emerge, focusing on witchcraft, fear, and persecution.

In the posts, which reference a Ubisoft leaker who previously dropped information tied to Far Cry and XDefiant, it was claimed that Hexe’s protagonist, ‘Anika’, is a descendant of Claudia Auditore, Ezio’s sister.

Prepare your salt, it’s time to grab a grain or two.

Is Ezio Auditore Coming Back?

As Ubisoft is shaping up to present a huge nostalgia trip with Black Flag Resynced, claims have surfaced online suggesting that the company could be preparing more fan service by bringing back Ezio Auditore, arguably the most beloved character from the entire franchise.

In a summary post on the Gaming Leaks and Rumours subreddit, comments made by Rogue, a reported Ubisoft leaker, were aggregated.

It was claimed that Elsa, previously reported as Assassin’s Creed Hexe’s protagonist, is actually named Anika, and that Elsa was just a placeholder name. It was then stated that she’s a descendant of Claudia Auditore, Ezio’s sister, who was also introduced in 2009’s Assassin’s Creed II and became a supporting member of the Assassin Brotherhood.

In a bold claim, it was stated: ‘Ezio is 100% returning.’

The rumors state that Ezio will show up and guide Anika in some way. The posts provided several voice lines, but fans were quick to point out that the timelines simply don’t match up. The German witch trails that the game reportedly focuses on didn’t happen until at least 100 years after Ezio’s in-universe death, but this wouldn’t be the first time that a character has transcended time.

For instance, Assassin’s Creed Revelations features a ghostly visage of Altair, who guides Ezio after dying centuries beforehand. In Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, we’re introduced to Kassandra, who manages to stave off death using an artefact that preserves her for millennia, with Ubisoft weaving her into other games further down the line.

For those not in the know, we have witnessed Ezio Auditore’s death, in an animated short called Embers. It was released in 2011 and showed the sunsetting of Ezio’s character, leaving his ultimate demise open to interpretation somewhat, but marking the end of his story.

That has prompted fans to assume that, if Ezio Auditore is indeed coming back, it’ll be in ghostly form, through some Animus glitch, or through the power of an Isu artefact, which is how most ghostly happenings are often explained in Assassin’s Creed.

It was recently claimed that Assasssin’s Creed Hexe’s foundation pivoted away from something magic and mystical to take on a more grounded approach to witchcraft, focusing more on alchemy and the like.
