The Steam Controller is arriving before the Steam Machine because it doesn’t require RAM, as Valve is already dealing with memory shortages.
Valve’s new Steam Controller is something we have been hearing about a lot, and now we finally have a launch date: the device releases on May 4. The makers of the Steam Machine also recently addressed the device’s development status, stating that the release is close. They have now explained why one is being released before the other.
Steam Controller Launches Early Since It Doesn’t Require RAM
In a new interview with Polygon, Valve hardware engineer Steve Cardinali revealed why the Steam Controller launched earlier. Cardinali stated that, as it doesn’t have “RAM in it”, it is not impacted by memory shortage issues, and bringing the product to the consumers will not be a complicated process. The hardware engineer added that they are ready and working to have the quantity ready for launch; however, demand may exceed expectations.
Steam Machine is taking the brunt of the memory shortage, with Valve revealing that it is reassessing the shipping schedule and pricing for the Steam Machine as well as the Steam Frame VR Headset. Later on, Valve released another update, stating that they “hope to ship in 2026”, but memory shortages were presenting a serious challenge, and they would share their plans publicly when finalized. We have yet to receive a release window for the Steam Machine.
In other news, Valve is not the only one suffering from memory issues, as Xbox has also revealed that Project Helix’s pricing and availability will be affected by RAM shortages. Additionally, a dataminer has found mentions of SteamGPT, which could help with platform support and CS2 anti-cheat.
