REPO Is The Latest Indie Game To Suffer At The Hands of Success

REPO hit the market at the end of February, and it has proven to be a smash hit with gamers everywhere. It’s a cooperative survival horror title in the vein of Phasmophobia or Lethal Company, and it has leaned on the success of those titles while bringing something fresh to the genre.

On Steam, REPO (R.E.P.O.) has managed to secure a rating of Overwhelmingly Positive from more than 113,000 reviews since February 2025, which is staggering. The developer, Semiwork, never anticipated this would happen, and that’s causing some issues at the studio.

REPO-ing The Rewards

REPO (which stands for Retrieve, Extract, and Profit Operation) is an online co-op horror game that boasts a unique physics engine and solid multiplayer mechanics. It’s as hilarious as it is terrifying at times, and the core premise of the game is to secure items from various maps while being hunted by monsters.

In a recent Q&A video from Semiwork, an indie developer, it was revealed that the rampant success of REPO has had an impact on the studio:

We know that people are longing for the new updates, and we understand and we hear you, and we want to assure that we are working as hard as we can to get this update out to you guys.

As mentioned in a previous video, the first update will take a bit longer as the huge success of REPO came upon us like a surprise, so there’s a lot of admin stuff and boring stuff that we have to do behind the scenes, and of course work on the game and make sure that everything is steady and ready for release.

It was also stressed (jokingly) that the team ‘slept once and (has) been awake ever since.’

(Thanks to GamesRadar for the Q&A spot)

Semiwork pushed out a couple of smaller games before releasing REPO, but nothing hit quite as hard as this latest indie title. It’s the latest in a long line of similar games to hit lofty heights on the sales and streaming charts worldwide.

In recent years, we’ve seen many indie titles break the mould and soar – Palworld, Balatro, and Blue Prince, to name a few. In some cases, games with a single developer are outperforming AAA titles.

What will be next?
