Yennefer’s Voice Actor Had No Idea Who She Played in The Witcher 3

Denise Gough played Yennefer of Vengerberg in The Witcher 3, arguably one of the most important characters in the game. She’s one of the most immediate options for romance given her closeness to Geralt of Rivia, the game’s hero, and she’s a powerful sorceress with quite a solid bearing on the story.

Gough wasn’t aware of any of this, though – and she continues to stay in the dark where the ongoing development of The Witcher franchise is concerned. In a recent interview, Denise Gough revealed that she didn’t even know who her character was after recording her lines for 2015’s The Witcher 3.

Who Am I?

In an interview with Eurogamer, Denise Gough sat down to talk about Andor, in which she stars as Dedra Meero.

The topic turned to The Witcher 4, which is in development as we speak at CD Projekt. In a bizarre turn of events, Gough revealed that she has no idea The Witcher 4 is a thing, and further, she admitted that she didn’t know who she’d voiced in 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

I didn’t know what I was doing. I’d never done a video game before. And then lots of – usually men – would come up to me in sound departments on film sets and go, ‘Are you Yennefer?’

And I was like, ‘Who’s Yennefer?’

This leads us to believe that either Gough didn’t connect at all with her character, and it was just another payday, or she recorded her lines in a vacuum and was never exposed to the character she was representing with her vocal work.

By extreme contrast, the voice of Geralt of Rivia, Doug Cockle, has pledged to play the character until the end of his days, and his voice is so iconic that it’s impossible not to know who he plays. That’s what I found when I spoke to him a while back about AI voice replication in gaming.

There’s every possibility that Yennefer of Vengerberg could surface in The Witcher 4, given that it revolves around Ciri and, for a while, Yennefer was a mother figure of sorts for the young Witcher.

I assume we’ll find out soon enough if Denise Gough is just trying to divert our expectations.
