Sony Responds to PlayStation DRM Fears With Official Statement

PlayStation has clarified concerns about DRM (Digital Rights Management) raised by players regarding their digital purchases.

In late April 2026, PlayStation players took to social media to express their worries about a new timer linked to their digital games. This timer required them to check in with an active internet connection every 30 days to maintain the license for their purchases.

Initially, there was confusion about the legitimacy of this new DRM system, with rumors suggesting it might be an unintended bug related to an update. In response, Sony has now issued an official statement on the matter.

Sony Addresses PlayStation DRM Timer Concerns From Players

Sony Interactive Entertainment has issued an official statement to GameSpot clarifying the matter. According to a representative, players will be able to access their games as usual. However, a single-time check-in will be required, which requires an active internet connection.

“Players can continue to access and play their purchased games as usual. A one-time online check is required to confirm the game’s license, after which no further check-ins are required.”

The concern for most players is similar to that which is raised around Nintendo Switch 2 Game Key Cards: The need for an internet connection to access your purchased content. Yes, it is 2026, and most people have multiple ways to get online, but some raise concerns about that being a requirement and about the inability to play purchased titles in the future without modern-day internet access.

There may be some who take solace in the fact that there’s no need for a monthly check-in, but for now, it seems this is where things stand regarding PlayStation digital purchases. Insider Gaming will continue to monitor the story and report any updates as more information becomes available.

  • Total bs to have to get online if you dont have an online connection or trying to save money in todays greedy world where getting online with a decent connection or not being throttled, to having to use a hotspot device bc you cant afford another device and it doesnt work with a Playstation. Its just wrong on so many levels, why do we even buy digital and getting forced into all digital when they are going to police it and tell you when and how you own it, or rent it. Entertainment as a whole has fell off a cliff on the quality of products, there isnt much worth watching, reading or playing and then they are always doing things to make it harder and less enjoyable and wonder why they are losing customers and having to get greedier by jacking up prices to keep profits up, losing more customers. They are on an derailed train of anticonsumer and greed.

  • Please, the games that we purchased from the psn store we should be able to keep forever.

    • You don’t own anything digital you buy, you purchase a license to use the media that can be revoked whenever.

  • It’s just the next step, it would be long before you’ll have to pay a “nominal fee” because your game hasn’t checked in online in 30 days. They’ve finally figured out how to get your to buy a game and then micro transactions just to play the game

  • So what if we don’t “check in” on time we lose our digital content and digital purchases?? Like wtf
