Takashi Iizuka has named Sonic Adventure 2 as the game in the franchise he has the fondest memories of working on.
Sonic Adventure 2 was the turning point for Sega’s mascot. It was the final Sonic game released on the Sega Dreamcast and among the first to be ported to the Nintendo GameCube after Sega exited the hardware market. This was such a pivotal moment that Nintendo had Mario greet Sonic with a hug as discussions began about a working relationship.
Now, the man responsible for so many of the Sonic franchise’s memories, having worked on them since 1992, is discussing what makes Adventure 2 so special in his eyes.
Takahashi Iizuka Reflects on the Development of Sonic Adventure 2

The comments come from an interview Famitsu conducted with Iizuka (translated by Genki on social media). Part of what makes the memories of the second Sonic Adventure so special for the head of the Sonic Team is that development began with just 11 people after he and select staff members moved to San Francisco to work on the project.
He also reflected on how much of the new location the team found itself in would be featured in the game, which would later be incorporated into the plot of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on the big screen.
“Just hearing this might make it sound like it was a tough development environment, but since we were a small team in a new location, I remember that we were all able to work together freely and enjoy the development while supporting each other both professionally and personally,” he said.

Today, Sonic remains a pillar of the gaming industry and a blueprint for a platform mascot. Sonic is celebrating his 35th anniversary this year, and part of that celebration includes the release of Sonic Pico Park. Learn more about the development of that here.
