Folks were turning feral recently based on a tidbit released by IGN, suggesting that PlayStation 5 pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6 were outpacing XBOX-based pre-orders by a whopping 8-to-1 ratio. However, the ‘data’ was based on the team’s internal affiliate systems, and not anything more concrete.
In a new report from Windows Central, an XBOX spokesperson has confirmed that the numbers published by IGN do not represent pre-order data, and that XBOX has had ‘record orders’ for the game. It wasn’t stressed in what capacity that record exists, though.
XBOX is Doing Just Fine, Apparently
In recent days, social media was ablaze with people running with a wild claim that PlayStation 5 pre-orders for GTA 6 were outgunning those on XBOX platforms by a massive margin. This fire was fuelled by IGN posting multiple times about the record, which caused netizens worldwide to spread the claims.
However, the whole thing didn’t add up too well, which meant that many outlets, including Insider Gaming, were reluctant to comment on the numbers.
In a new report from Windows Central, it was confirmed that XBOX has formally addressed the claims:
This doesn’t represent pre-order data. We’ve had record orders. People should wait for real data and not clicks on affiliate links.
Again, it isn’t clear in what capacity that record has been recorded. It could be the fastest that a game has reached a certain milestone, which is the most likely situation at play. The expectation is that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be the most successful game ever made in terms of day-one sales, and many believe it will recoup development costs in pre-orders alone.
Windows Central went as far as to suggest IGN was partaking in the spreading of misinformation based on how it was handling the data available, and I’d certainly lean in the direction of agreeing with that.
It’s hardly a wild prediction to say that GTA 6 will sell better on PlayStation, especially considering it’s supposed to be the best platform for the game.

It probably was record numbers for them but 100% more bought on PS5 than Xbox on large numbers. The PR shill team has to lie as always they helped ruin Xbox end all ties to them and watch Xbox could come back. They need to buy Take2 or spin off Xbox into Take2 the whole thing. No one better complain about high prices after buying this or evil corporations this is why companies won’t change Cyberpunk was another.
