This week, Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive, and Netflix combined forces to produce a stellar, long-form reveal of Grand Theft Auto 6, the most anticipated game ever made. It’s set to drop on November 19, and the lengthy, gameplay-focused deep dive we received on August 27 told us everything we could want to know about the game.
But in case that wasn’t enough, a group of specially curated creators got the chance to travel to Rockstar North in Edinburgh to preview GTA 6 and pick up even juicier tidbits. For instance, we now know that GTA 6 will not have a first-person mode at launch, with Rockstar Games dropping the feature that emerged in GTA 5 several years ago.
GTA 6 is Third-Person Only, It’s Confirmed
One of the creators who traveled to Scotland to preview GTA 6 alongside Rockstar North has confirmed that there are no first-person mechanics in the game. Or, at least, they won’t be there at launch.
When GTA 5 dropped in 2013, the first-person features were limited to what you’d expect, and it wasn’t until 2022, with the release of the Enhanced Version of the game, that a full-fledged first-person mode became available. With that, you were able to play the entire game end-to-end without leaving that first-person perspective.
It stands to reason that we could see a similar pattern emerge with Grand Theft Auto 6, but that’s conjecture.
Davy Jones, one of the creators invited to Rockstar North, reported (and was subsequently reported on) that there are no first-person perspective options in GTA 6.
It’s worth stressing that it’s tough to verify if Davy Jones, one of the most prolific Brazilian creators in the world, actually witnessed or confirmed first-hand that first-person doesn’t exist, or if he’s saying it doesn’t exist simply because he didn’t see it specifically used.
For the majority of Grand Theft Auto fans out there, this isn’t a huge loss. It was a nice-to-have in GTA 5, rather than a need-to-have, and it was borderline gimmicky. It never felt as smooth as it could have, and at times, it was unbearably clunky and awkward. That said, it could have completely altered the gameplay experience, turning GTA into more of a Far Cry-like title, had it been delivered perfectly.
