The producer of the Sonic the Hedgehog games, Takashi Iizuka, thinks that AAA game developers could learn some things from indie developers in the same way that he believes major movie studios could learn from indie movie successes.
Sonic the Hedgehog is celebrating his 35th anniversary. He’s also been one of the top gaming icons throughout that time. That being said, not every Sonic game is reviewed glowingly. Still, the series always looks to evolve and try new things, such as the current Sonic Pico Park indie game, revealed during Summer Game Fest 2026.
Sonic Producer Takashi Iizuka Compares Indie Game Success to Indie Film Hits
During a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Takashi Iizuka spoke about how Sega approaches collaborating with indie developers on projects such as the aforementioned Sonic Pico Park. He noted that it’s a major investment to make a top game in a franchise, but indie developers can quickly transition from generating an idea to executing that idea.
He says that major game development companies could “learn from the indie development scene.” Also, he finds it to be “really stimulating working with those indie developers, because you get to feel that smaller team energy and that quickness of working to get an idea into an experience.”
He would compare this to the movie industry. Currently, Backrooms and Obsession, two smaller-budget films, are having great success in theaters amid films with crazy high budgets attached to known IPs. Iizuka pointed out the parallels between the two entertainment mediums, noting that everything is defined by what customers actually enjoy.
“You see movies like Backrooms and [Obsession], these much smaller creative efforts that are still becoming these great successful hits, so I do see a parallel in the movie industry to what’s kind of happening in the game industry with the amount of investment and the actual entertainment that people are consuming and enjoying.”
