Rob Nelson, Head of Development at Rockstar Games, discusses how long Grand Theft Auto 6 took to develop. In that discussion, he explains why the development team avoids making topical stories from everyday life major parts of the game.
Grand Theft Auto 6, one of the most anticipated games of its generation, is finally set to release on November 19. As a result, media coverage has ramped up to hype the game. One person who has given plenty of interviews ahead of the game’s release is Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North.
GTA 6 Has Been in Development Since 2015

In a recent interview, he was asked whether the team considers real-life major happenings when crafting the plot of a major title like Grand Theft Auto 6. He told Trois Couleurs that development takes so long that they try not to add extremely topical plot points, since they might feel dated by the time the game releases.
“That’s a very interesting question. We develop on very long cycles. The game’s been in development since 2015, so the idea is gestating for a long time. The majority of the team really started rolling onto it after Red Dead Redemption 2 released in 2018. We have to be very careful about what ideas we choose to put in there, because it can take a long time to figure out what our angle is on this. Because by the time we write it and cast it and shoot it, and implement it, whatever it is – it could be gone, it could change, it could be dated. And so we’re always trying to think about whether something will stand the test of time. And so, you look at those things, and we only try to pick things if they work with the story we’re trying to tell, in the world we’re trying to tell it in. I think there will always be things to satirize; there are always ridiculous situations and behaviors that we can find, but we just have to be careful about what we pick.”
Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated to finally release on November 19. It will be immediately playable on the Sony PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X|S. It will come to PC later. PlayStation recently announced a new limited-edition controller to celebrate the game’s release.
