1666: Amsterdam Developer Addresses Game’s Generative AI Use

Through a new statement, Panache Games has admitted to having generative AI assets in 1666: Amsterdam’s prologue.

1666: Amsterdam was featured in the latest Summer Game Fest event, and players have been eagerly waiting for more information. However, they were surprised to learn that the next set of information would involve generative AI, but developers are actively working to address the situation as soon as possible.

1666: Amsterdam Dev Admits to Generative AI Use in New Statement

Through the latest post on X (formerly Twitter), the official Panache Games account has confirmed the use of generative AI in 1666: Amsterdam. The matter came to their attention when many players questioned them about using generative AI assets in the game and its promotional material. The dev team then looked into the matter, only to realize that “there were indeed some early versions of assets that made their way into the prologue. This includes some in-game portraits and external marketing assets.”

However, they have also informed the players that these assets are under investigation and will be replaced with human-made versions in a future update. They have also acknowledged the problem and apologized to the community. Panache Games concluded by promising that no generative AI assets will make their way into the Early Access or the full version of the game. Check out the full statement below:

A number of people have raised questions or concerns to us about whether assets in our marketing and game use generative AI. We have a dedicated team of over a dozen talented and experienced artists. With them, we looked into the assets in question and found that there were indeed some early versions of assets that made their way into the the prologue. This includes some in-game portraits and external marketing assets. We are actively reviewing the assets in question. Human made versions will be released in an update dropping soon. We own up to this oversight and apologize for any upset caused. Please be assured that the Early Access and full game will not include any assets generated by AI.

In other news, Ubisoft’s Teammates platform, the playable, generative AI experience, is receiving more investment from the firm. Additionally, the Lies of P developer, Round8 Studio, is looking for an AI creator to generate concept art. What are your thoughts on 1666: Amsterdam devs admitting to using generative AI?
