The PlayStation 6 reportedly already costs around $960 in materials to manufacture, suggesting the next-generation console could be much more expensive than we think.
The news comes from Kepler_K2, who has previously accurately leaked technical specifications and prices for console parts.
PlayStation 6 Could Cost $1000+
According to Kepler, the BoM (bill of materials) price for the PlayStation 6 has increased by $200 since March 2026, when it cost $760 to manufacture a PS6. With the price increase of $200 in just a matter of months, it means that the PlayStation 6 now reportedly costs $960 to build.
But that isn’t the end of it, as many analysts in the tech industry warn that RAM and SSD prices are yet to soar, with no end in sight, thanks to AI. That means that the BoM of the PS6 could continue to rise, putting it well past the $1000 mark,
That means even with PlayStation traditionally subsidizing its console cost in favor of software profits, the PlayStation 6 could still cost $1000 or more, as consoles have traditionally been subsidized by only around $100-$200.

That means if by the time the PlayStation 6 releases (which rumors speculate is 2027, but Insider Gaming couldn’t verify), next-generation consoles, at least where the PS6 is concerned, could cost $1400-$1500 to produce.
The $1000 price point (likely $999 for psychological reasons) on release for the next generation consoles already seems high, but if the price of RAM and SSDs continues, it could be much higher, or at the very least, we could see what we’re seeing now with current generation consoles with constant price increases.

If Xbox does $1000 so will Sony and Valve is doing it too. They may want to make profit this time.
Does Sony know about this, or has Kepler not told them yet?
what’s the point in buying a console then
You know, a PC won’t be any cheaper. So the console has the same appeal as always: No (or less) hassle updating it, a mostly single-purpose device for games, and no Windows.
Great!
I love how they cant just relax and just…..not make another console. We dont NEED a new console right now if prices are high for parts. Its like they’re going to use high part prices as a reason to gouge us. Just dont make them. Im not sure if anyone knows this but the xbox series x and pspro are pretty fkin powerful and by the time we need a next Gen console im sure the prices will come down for the respective tech to build them.
Considering what the current generation is capable of, and the MASSIVE number of games available, there’s simply no way I’ll be in the market for another console within the next 6-8 years. You’ll be losing anyway, because not many people can throw down a grand for an emergency, let alone a console.
Yeah if it’s twice what the ps5 was? People are not gonna buy that…. People still haven’t even gotten ps5s yet XD
