Around 85% of Electronic Arts’ (EA) quality assurance (QA) work is being done with some form of AI or machine learning. That’s according to EA CEO Andrew Wilson.
In an interview with Fox Business Network’s Liz Claman at the new iicon event in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Wilson was asked about how AI factors into the company’s workflow. He was asked directly about the belief that AI could take the jobs of employees at the company, a notion he didn’t seem to agree with, despite more work being done that utilizes it.
EA Is Still Hiring Despite AI Growth
“I saw some data recently, I think, now almost all—like 85%—of our quality assurance [work] is done with some kind of machine learning or AI-driven algorithm,” Wilson said via Game File. “Yet as a company, we hire more QA people than we ever have.”
Wilson says that the work AI is being used for at EA is basic, mundane tasks in the QA process. He said it’s things like “turn the box on, turn the box off, boot it up, shut it down, does it crash, all these things.”
To the question of where AI could replace employees within the company, Wilson said that all implementations have “been almost entirely augmentation”.
The worry about AI replacing jobs in gaming has been growing within the industry for a few years now. While many of the top names keep saying that it simply can’t replace the work being done by people, it hasn’t toned down the concern from those whose jobs could be at risk.
