Mega Man Dual Override Producer Explains Franchise Return

The dev team of Mega Man Dual Override explains why now is the right time to bring the franchise back and why this game is the perfect opportunity to make Proto Man playable again.

Mega Man Dual Override was first revealed at the 2025 Game Awards and recently received a new trailer during the Gamescom series of events. This will be the first mainline Mega Man game in 8 years, and one of the developers is now explaining why now is the right time to bring back Capcom’s Blue Bomber.

Mega Man’s 40th Anniversary Helped Spark Its Return

Speaking with VGC, series producer Shingo Izumi explained that the game’s 40th anniversary was a key reason the series was returning for the first time since Mega Man 11.

“Since the release of Mega Man 11, the team has been busy with different collection titles, like the Battle Network Legacy Collection series and the Star Force collections. And now that we are approaching the 40th anniversary of the entire Mega Man series, we felt that now is the time to take on new challenges and go back to the roots of the entire Mega Man series,” said Izumi.

The game’s producer, Hiroyuki Minamitani, was asked about why this was the right game to feature Proto Man so heavily. Again, the 40th anniversary was a major driving factor. The team asked what fans would want to see in the new game, and one obvious answer was to bring back Proto Man.

“This is a popular character that fans love, but fans wouldn’t be satisfied with two different characters with different skins and the same play style, so we are introducing new game elements that differ between Mega Man’s play style and Proto Man’s game style. We hope that fans will definitely look forward to that,” he said.
