In a recent interview spread with The New York Times, XBOX’s ‘millennial’ CEO Asha Sharma made a promise to readers worldwide: ‘XBOX is not for sale.’ This came after a question regarding the potential divestiture of XBOX, a topic that surfaced following weeks of layoffs, studio farewells, and project cancelations.
Sharma revealed she (and XBOX) is in it for the long run, and that she’s willing to work with Microsoft for as long as it takes to ‘set the company up for success’ and deliver on this promise of entertaining a billion people with the XBOX ecosystem.
Asha Sharma Takes Firm Stance on XBOX Prospects
In a new interview with The New York Times, Asha Sharma has made it clear that XBOX isn’t going anywhere.
It was admittedly a statement referred to as a ‘bob and weave’ by the Times’ Zachary Small, but it was definitive enough to be taken at face value as a resounding answer:
XBOX is not for sale. We will do whatever it takes to set the company up for success, and we will look at the right partnerships, the right operating model, and everything needed to achieve that.
Of course, the ‘whatever it takes’ part has proven a tough pill to swallow in recent weeks. The team at XBOX has laid off hundreds of employees, and still has more to let go of on the horizon. The reorganization, which was dubbed the biggest restructuring in the company’s history, saw multiple studios move out from under the XBOX banner.
The most drastic changes were reserved for the last few days, which saw the likes of Halo move under Activision Blizzard, and Obsidian relocate under Bethesda Game Studios’ banner.
Sharma then said:
We’ve got a long way to go with Microsoft, and we’re going to take the long-term view.
