Goichi Suda’s Grasshopper Manufacture has announced that it will be independent of NetEase Games as of October 1, 2026.
In 2021, NetEase Games acquired Grasshopper Manufacture and assisted the company with business planning as well as providing funding for game development. Grasshopper also benefited from the support of thousands of NetEase artists and technical experts, who contributed to game art and quality assurance. However, starting tomorrow, that will no longer be the case.
Grasshopper Manufacture Goes Independent to Provide a Wider Variety of Styles of Video Games
In a message from the company’s co-founder and director of “Romeo is a Dead Man,” Goichi “Suda 51” Suda, Grasshopper Manufacture has announced it is becoming independent from NetEase. Following the release of “Romeo is a Dead Man” and the celebration of the company’s 28th anniversary, the team began discussing the future of the company. The team expressed a desire to offer an even wider variety of styles to video game enthusiasts everywhere, which is why they decided to become an independent developer again.

The team had thorough discussions with NetEase Games before reaching this conclusion and praised their “generous cooperation”. Suda 51 also said Grasshopper Manufacture has improved its self-publishing know-how and now has a broad range of options. The company has also promised that regardless of how their games are published, they will still stay true to creating unique titles featuring the “NO GAME NO LIFE” gaming experience expected of Grasshopper Manufacture.
