The Steam Machine is another Valve console in its growing lineup, complementing the Steam Deck. This one is more focused on being a state-of-the-art home console system, and the legendary Shuhei Yoshida has offered his thoughts after spending time with the device.
In a landscape of rising console prices and worrying industry trends—such as Sony stopping disc production for new PlayStation Games in 2028—the Steam Machine is looking to throw its name into the hat.
Shuhei Yoshida, one of the industry’s most respected figures, has offered a mini-review of sorts.
Steam Machine Has Pros and Cons

In a post on X, Yoshida revealed that he had spent a few hours with the Steam Machine and had some good things to say, whilst being objective in some criticism.
On the Nice list, Yoshida said the Steam Machine’s UI is ‘easy to use,’ and ‘being able to boot up by pressing a button on Steam Controller is a killer feature.’
Some of the other positives seem less important, such as customizable face plates and boot-up videos, but being able to play Steam games properly on a big TV is a plus.

However, some of the negatives quickly fight back. Yoshida explained that ‘3D performance is just…meh,’ that ‘The system recommends to default to 1080p – am I going back to PS4 days?’ and ‘Some games take a looooooong time to boot.’
But his final verdict was quite interesting:
‘The price was very unfriendly. Hard to recommend to people unless for research.’
There are rumors that the PS6 might cost around a grand, but we know for a fact that the Steam Machine will cost more than $1,000.
It’s also interesting that Valve has seemingly walked back on Steam Machine 4K60 claims.
It’s a high price tag, for sure. Check out the Steam Machine announcement video below to see what you make of it.
