Bethesda Makes Clever Oblivion ‘Physical’ Post As Sony Scraps Discs

Earlier today, Sony revealed that from January 2028, all new PlayStation games will be digital only, with the tech titan scrapping the production of physical discs. It was an announcement that was met with staunch backlash on social media, prompting an outcry from developers and gamers alike.

Two hours after that announcement, the team at Bethesda Game Studios uploaded a short clip promoting the physical release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on Switch 2. Thanks to the timing, it looked more like a tongue-in-cheek gut-punch to Sony, even if it wasn’t meant to be taken that way.

Oblivion Goes Physical on Switch 2

Two hours after Sony broke the news that PlayStation games are going all-digital, Bethesda’s social team posted a ten-second clip advertising the all-physical edition of Oblivion Remastered Deluxe Edition for Nintendo Switch 2. It’s dropping on August 11, bringing the masterful recreation to an all-new audience.

The timing of the post was most likely a mere coincidence, but it read like something sly from Bethesda:

Could the team have knocked up this snapshot meme in the two hours between Sony making the fateful announcement and Bethesda hitting publish? Perhaps.

Either way, fans took to the post with positivity (mostly) in the comment section. Many praised Bethesda for the move, talking up the benefits of physical media, while others lambasted the studio for not doing the same thing with prior ports, like Skyrim and Fallout 4.

On June 30, Bethesda posted a blog explaining how the Oblivion launch will work on Nintendo Switch 2, and it was in there that the physical edition was unveiled. That makes it even more likely that the clip above was merely in the bank and posted with some coincidental timing.
