Since its launch in 2015, Bloodborne has been one of the most popular games on PlayStation. Even 11 years later, it’s still selling well, according to some estimates. So why hasn’t there been a Bloodborne 2 or even a remaster of the original?
Everyone has their thoughts on the matter, but for former PlayStation chairman Shawn Layden, he thinks it’s less to do with the desire and more to do with legal hurdles.
Rights Play a Big Part in a Game’s Future
Speaking on the latest episode of The Trophy Room podcast, Layden was simply asked why there hasn’t been more Bloodborne over the years. Layden says that he feels Bloodborne is a great game and that the work Sony did with FromSoftware was fantastic during his time. However, there are challenges that present themselves when trying to bring back an older title or even possibly make a new one.
“Can you do something that is not only respectful of the original, but can you recreate the phenomenon,” he said, before getting into something that many fans may not always consider.

“There’s a lot of involved rights associated with it,” Layden said. “And something like that where Sony is in there, and [FromSoftware] is in there, and FROM’s parent company is in there, I think just getting everyone to sign off on everything is probably the biggest challenge there.
Elsewhere in the interview, Layden talks about how he would handle the PlayStation 6, support for indie games, Sony’s acquisition of Insomniac, and more.
