A new blog post reveals that the PS5 is getting its own AI upscaling with QSSR, or Quick Spectral Super Resolution.
The PS5 Pro features AI upscaling called PSSR, which has significantly improved the gaming experience for many players by boosting both visual quality and frame rates. It appears that the PlayStation 5 will also receive its own set of enhancements, which players can test out today through titles like Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei.
PS5’s AI Upscaling Tech, QSSR, Launches Today with Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei
With the help of Project Amethyst, the AI graphics partnership PlayStation has with AMD, they were able to come up with a “quick new evolution of PSSR” upscaling tech that can be used on the PS5. QSSR, or Quick Spectral Super Resolution, has been described as a new performance tier of AI upscaling that comes through “two key innovations”: a streamlined neural network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5.
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei will receive an update today that adds QSSR as an additional graphics option on the PlayStation 5; here’s how it works for both games.

What Does QSSR Improve in Marvel’s Wolverine on PS5
Mike Fitzgerald, the head of technology at Insomniac, revealed that QSSR enables them to achieve “pixel-level clarity and stability,” which enhances the overall fidelity of the game in various situations. A new video shows that in Fidelity Mode with QSSR activated for Marvel’s Wolverine on the PS5, many distant buildings, a tower, and nearby houses displayed significantly more detail than in Fidelity Mode without AI upscaling.
What Does QSSR Improve in Ghost of Yotei on PS5
Jasmin Party, the lead rendering engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, explains that QSSR (Quality Suppressed Spatial Reconstruction) has significantly enhanced the level of detail in both characters and environments. She notes that it provides “a level of temporal stability that hasn’t been possible on the PS5 console until now.” A video shows that foliage in the immediate environment, as well as Atsu’s clothing, her shamisen, and her saddle, had much greater detail when the Ray Tracing mode with QSSR was enabled in Ghost of Yotei on the PS5.
