Sony’s new patent could let players make payments directly from their PS5 controllers.
Today seems to be PlayStation patent day, as we just saw another one earlier today about Sony using AI to remotely identify and fix tech problems automatically. The latest patent is more of a quality-of-life update, providing more ways to make payments on PlayStation’s platform.
Sony’s New Patent Makes PS5 Controllers a Payment Method
A recent patent discovered by Patentlyze reveals that Sony may enable users to use their PS5 controller as a payment device. This feature would allow players to make payments directly through their smartphones using the DualSense controller. Users would simply need to bring their smartphone close to the controller, and a prompt would appear on the smartphone to complete the payment. Once the transaction is completed, the purchase would be reflected on the console.

This is an excellent implementation of the DualSense controllers as a payment method for users who do not have a card or another payment method saved on their console. The controller serves as a way to transfer your payment details from your smartphone to the console. One of the diagrams also indicated that players could bring a card near the controller to purchase a gift card.
However, similar to all patents, these are not confirmed features that are coming to PlayStation. Sony could make it available in the future, change the way it works, or decide not to use it at all; it is entirely up to them.
