Everyone knows that at the core of the Grand Theft Auto series is crime, with robbing banks, stealing cars and high-stakes shootouts just another day in the life of a GTA protagonist. However, it’s been revealed that Rockstar is pushing things to the next level with GTA 6, as the depth behind these mechanics is deeper than ever.
In fact, there’s set to be far more choice behind your actions in the highly anticipated title, with it being cited that you’re able to choose what kind of crook you are, and it all ties into your Criminal Profile.
Criminal Profile, Explained
Rockstar titles are no stranger to a morality system, with such mechanics being present in Red Dead Redemption 2, the studio’s last title. However, that has been incorporated into Grand Theft Auto 6 through the means of the Criminal Profile, a system which Edge Magazine’s latest deep dive has broken down.
This system tracks Jason and Lucia’s behaviour on a scale from “Professional” to “Irredeemable”, and we caught our first glimpse of this during the original batch of CYBERLEEK videos. The way you act in your everyday life affects this scale, and whilst all crime is bad, there’s still room for you to act on a more diplomatic path.
For example, Edge Magazine notes that not all combat needs to end in death, with the option to incapacitate enemies being just as viable as killing them. Alternatively, you can try intimidating enemies before resorting to violence.
Of course, as is classic GTA fashion, you’re more than welcome to shoot first and ask questions later, but know that you’ll begin to develop a violent Criminal Profile, and this isn’t just for flavor; instead, this can directly influence how Jason and Lucia’s story unfolds.
What’s not up for debate is whether you are a criminal, though. You have more freedom to tackle situations how you might prefer, but GTA 6 is fundamentally a story about crime, and there’s no escaping that.
Edge Magazine’s deep dive into GTA 6 didn’t stop there, either. 12 new screenshots were revealed, as well as a closer look at how big the map of Leonida actually is—spoiler: developers are still finding new areas they’ve never seen before.
