Gacha RPG Infects Players with Malware But Says Sorry with Free Loot

Fans of Duet Night Abyss, a free-to-play gacha RPG, found themselves recently struck by a malware attack. The developer, Pan Studio, held up its hands and admitted fault after a cybersecurity incident hit the game’s launcher and went on to infect innocent players.

The malware, which surfaced as a Trojan, was reportedly detected by most users’ antivirus software, but the incident led to widespread loss of faith in the game, prompting many to take to social media to badmouth the title and its developer.

As an apology, the developer decided to distribute some free loot as compensation.

Duet Night Abyss Slammed by Cybersecurity Shocker

In a lengthy post on social media, Duet Night Abyss’ developer, Pan Studio, explained the scope of the cybersecurity failure that affected players. They wrote:

First and foremost, we would like to express our deepest apologies for the cybersecurity incident that occurred yesterday. Following the resolution of these temporary issues, we have conducted a full review and summary of the event.

With a stroke of rare transparency, the team offered an end-to-end timeline of occurrences, the kind that would usually be contained to internal teams fire-fighting the incident. The entire timeline spanned two and a half hours, starting with the deployment of a hotfix and ending with an emergency update that removed the malicious files from the launcher.

The team revealed that the attack originated from a ‘specific region’ and targeted their internal office systems and live servers.

In a bid to bolster confidence in the game, a multi-point breakdown was offered to explain what’s being done to harden Duet Night Abyss’ security systems going forward.

Then, at the base of the message, a spot of compensation was outlined: ‘Commission Manual: Volume III * 5, Prismatic Hourglass * 10.’

It wrapped with a final note:

The development team sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience and concern this incident has caused to players worldwide. We understand that apologies and compensation cannot immediately bridge the gap in trust; therefore, we humbly ask for your patience as we work to provide continuous, stable service to every player.
