Dying Light: The Beast was given an all-new trailer during the recent Summer Game Fest showcase and a confirmed release date of August 22. The next iteration in the Dying Light series, which is now ten years old, has been turning heads for a few months since being revealed at Gamescom in August 2024.
I had the opportunity to sit down with Techland’s Tymon Smektala, franchise director, at Summer Game Fest. We gushed about the success of the franchise and took a look at what comes next…
‘We Can Do Much More With Dying Light’
When Dying Light: The Beast is released in August, it’ll usher back in Kyle Crane, the legendary protagonist of the first game, released in 2015. He’s a different animal this time around, warped by dark experiments and wielding immense powers and abilities.
It might seem like Dying Light: The Beast represents something of an endpoint for the series, given that it was planned as a final DLC for Dying Light 2: Stay Human but has now been released as a standalone title.
That’s not the case.
Smektala mentioned that The Beast is an ending of sorts, but it’s more of an introduction to what comes next for Dying Light.
When you play the game until the end, you will get a glimpse – a piece of what we’ve planned for the future of the series.
I don’t want to hype this because it’s a very short scene, but still, there is the tease – the glimpse of what’s going to happen.
This says confidently that Dying Light is here to stay and we want to do more with it.
The Beast is kind of like the ending of the first decade, the first era, but also an opening of what’s to come.
Tymon also explained that a few months ago, Techland started treating The Beast as the next major entry into the Dying Light series. He said, ‘Maybe it doesn’t have ‘3’ in it, but for us, it is Dying Light 3.’
The Beast is set to be something special, which I can say with certainty, having finally played the game during Summer Game Fest. It’s different enough from Dying Light 2: Stay Human to feel like a new game, which is what the team was aiming for. In the nine weeks we have left until the game is released, mass polishing will take place to ensure it hits the market in the best state possible.
