Xbox Plans to Rework Game Pass with Sustainable Economics

Services are a key pillar of the Xbox brand. Now, the company is focused on re-strengthening one of its main sources of growth and interaction, the Xbox Game Pass service.

Xbox has laid out its core priorities for the future in the new era led by Asha Sharma. One of the major focuses remains the reworking of the Game Pass subscription service as Microsoft reconfigures one of its key pillars of financial growth amid this period of economic uncertainty.

Recently, Sharma announced the decision to lower the price of the Game Pass Ultimate tier. Now, a new company-wide memo further details the main objectives of the refocused Xbox brand, including continued efforts to strengthen Game Pass,

Xbox Now Aims to Fortify Game Pass in Affordability

The memo, credited to both Asha Sharma and Xbox CCO Matt Booty, outlines the brand’s four priorities moving forward. Those priorities are hardware, content, experience, and services. As it pertains to Services, the first key objective is to “fortify Game Pass with clear differentiation and sustainable economics.”

It was recently reported that Xbox was considering a more à la carte approach with Game Pass, letting players choose the elements of their individual subscription that matter to them. While this was not explicitly confirmed in the memo, it is noted that they want the brand to be built around affordability and open to personal choice.

In line with past comments from Sharma, the memo states that the north star moving forward will be the daily active Xbox player base.

Other key objectives for Xbox include expanding and strengthening the portfolio of franchises players love and improving the fundamentals for players and business partners. Additionally, all roads are still pointing to the next console, codenamed Project Helix, and they want to make sure their next hardware output leads the way in performance and the ability to play both console and PC games.
