Mark Rubin proudly built up the hype and led XDefiant, touted as the Call of Duty killer. While XDefiant never quite lived up to its lofty expectations, it was a more than serviceable FPS. Rubin recently responded to a message about XDefiant making a comeback.
XDefiant had fast and frantic gunplay and interesting game modes, but I think there was a serious lack of content at launch and in subsequent updates. It felt half-cooked, despite how fun it was to play. You’ll find plenty of people still longing for the shooter to make a defiant comeback.
XDefiant Coming Back Is All Down To Ubisoft

Ubisoft’s Mark Rubin left the industry as XDefiant was shut down forever in 2025.
Many factors contributed to the game’s downfall, but it’s clear he—and many people—didn’t want the XDefiant train to come to a screeching halt.
X user Chadieladdie wrote on the platform:
‘Is there ANY hope of XDefiant servers being brought back up? I understand the cost of running them, but the game is sooooooo missed.’
Who should respond to them? None other than Mark Rubin. He said that he also missed the shooter and that the ball is basically in Ubisoft’s court.
‘I miss it too! That would be up to Ubisoft I imagine they could if they wanted to but I think they have a lot going on right now staying afloat.’
He’s certainly right about Ubisoft having a lot on its plate right now:
- The former Prince of Persia Ubisoft dev is hiring for a new game.
- There’s Assassin’s Creed Hexe.
- We know that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still happening.
- Let’s not forget Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced and a potential Assassin’s Creed 1 Remake!
It might take a lot for XDefiant to reappear, but you can never say never in this industry.
