Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann has revealed that two new projects set in The Last of Us universe are currently in early development.
The news was shared on September 28, a date widely recognised as The Last of Us Day, as it marks the in-game anniversary of the Cordyceps outbreak. To celebrate the occasion, fans were given an update on the future of the franchise, although it seems we’ll have to wait a while before seeing what’s next.
The Last of Us Lives On
The update came directly from Neil Druckmann, who published a blog post on Naughty Dog’s official website. Alongside discussing when fans can expect to see more of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, the studio head also offered a glimpse into the future of The Last of Us.
While Druckmann confirmed that Intergalactic will receive a full reveal in 2027, he also shared some exciting news for fans of the post-apocalyptic franchise, revealing that Naughty Dog has “a couple of very exciting new projects in very early stages.”

Although he didn’t share any further details, Druckmann stressed that “both projects will expand the canon of The Last of Us beyond Part 1 and Part 2.” He also explained that the team wouldn’t return to the franchise without having something meaningful to add to its world and lore, adding that Naughty Dog “believe these stories are worth telling.”
It’s worth noting that Druckmann specifically used the term “projects,” rather than games. While new entries in the series are certainly the likely outcome, there’s no confirmation that either project will be a video game. Another television series or an entirely different venture into another medium could also be on the cards.
Although it’s been some time since the release of a new mainline entry, The Last of Us has remained a significant part of Naughty Dog’s portfolio. However, the franchise has experienced a somewhat turbulent few years, with the HBO adaptation approaching its expected conclusion and the highly anticipated multiplayer spin-off, The Last of Us Online, having been cancelled despite considerable excitement from fans and developers alike.
