A tech insider has claimed that Valve could release the Steam Deck 2 in 2028, unless it is delayed by memory shortages.
Valve’s handheld PC proposition, the Steam Deck, was released all the way back in 2022, and since then, we have only seen one refresh for the device, an OLED version that released in 2023. Most recently, we saw the handheld device go out of stock for several markets, and Valve quietly ended the production of the LCD model. Now we finally have some new information on the Steam Deck 2.
Steam Deck 2 Planned for 2028 Release Unless Memory Shortages Delay It Further
The latest claims about the Steam Deck 2 release window come from KeplerL2’s recent post on NeoGaf. When asked whether it would be 2029 before we see the next iteration, the insider responded stating that as far as he knows, Valve “were targeting 2028”, however, the “whole RAM/NAND situation could delay it,” as the entire gaming industry seems to be suffering from memory shortages and the exisiting Steam Deck has been impacted by it too.
However, the insider explained that there might be a silver lining if Steam Deck 2 gets delayed further. As Valve’s device is not built on a “semi-custom SoC” like the PlayStation 6 and Project Helix, it means that the manufacturers could upgrade it as time goes on, and “it could end up with better specs” if it is delayed. Valve had also stated earlier this year that it would be “reassessing pricing for the Steam Machine as global memory shortages continue into 2026.”
In other news, Jynxzi received a three-day Market ban on Steam after an attempt to circumvent Steam’s deposit restrictions. Additionally, Valve has issued a lengthy Steam statement in response to New York’s lawsuit, disputing claims that its loot boxes constitute illegal gambling. I mean makes sense. It’s usually taken a year or so for AMD’s new architecture to trickle down to APU’s. It’s a shame we couldn’t have gotten RDNA 4 while we waited.
Hopefully it and SteamBox come out 2028. Both are cops easy. No point buying PS6 or Helix.
I have been waiting for Steam Deck 2 for a while. I am looking into it now that i have a huge Steam collection (and growing). But the original is kind of weak and old and didn’t want it (it is also out of stock anyway). A proper Steam Deck 2 that would be around 3x-4x more powerful and have proper FSR5 on a 1080p screen? Yes please….
