Matt Groening Teases Simpsons Hit & Run Return

The Simpsons: Hit & Run may return in some form, Matt Groening says. Showrunner Matt Selman cautions that no new game has been officially confirmed yet.

This latest nugget of hope comes from Disney’s D23 presentation. During a Simpsons-related event, Groening, the show’s creator, was asked whether the 2003 game could return or a sequel could be released. He teased that something is in the works; however, the current showrunner, Matt Selman, was right there to make sure people understood that nothing is official yet.

Is Simpsons Hit & Run Returning? Fans Really Want It To

Why Didn't We Get The Simpsons: Hit and Run 2?

For over two decades, Hit & Run has been the gold standard of Simpsons video games. Far removed from the days of BartMania in the early 90s, when many Simpsons games were released, but also far from today’s landscape, where no dedicated Simpsons games have been released on console in nearly 20 years, the game took the Grand Theft Auto formula and slapped it with a yellow coat of paint.

To this day, people hope for a remake, and recently, Selman, who also wrote on the game, noted that nothing is set in stone and you should never say never.

“My quote about Hit & Run would be, ‘Never say never,’ because we know people love it. We know they want it, so that’s good. If we know people want it, never say never.”

He’s also stated in the past that a remaster would be tricky because of licensing and corporate complications.

To quench the thirst for The Simpsons: Hit & Run, dedicated Simpsons fans have launched several fan projects in an effort to get the job done themselves.

In an era dominated by remakes, remasters, and classic licensed games seeing new life through compilations, hope for the world of Hit & Run to return remains as eternal as the life of the animated sitcom seems to be. Insider Gaming will continue to monitor the story and report any updates as more information becomes available.
