As generative AI becomes increasingly integrated into video game development, more legendary creators are being asked what they think of the technology. Shigeru Miyamoto says generative AI could clarify what it means to create by separating human design intent from routine production work.
Miyamoto is a legendary game developer at Nintendo and created the Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pikmin franchises, among others. Now, he’s commenting on generative AI and his belief that there is still plenty of room for human creators who can center design intention in what they do.
Shigeru Miyamoto Says AI Can Put Creativity in Focus

After receiving the Japanese Order of Culture, Miyamoto spoke to Denfaminicogamer. During the interview, he was asked what he believes generative AI will do to gaming culture as a whole. He first spoke broadly about the changes he’s seen in design over the years, then explained that these tools will help draw a clearer line between creating and working.
Miyamoto, echoing similar comments from fellow Nintendo creator Masahiro Sakurai, said he feels AI tools will put more focus on the human touch and human creation, and that only human-created projects will truly stand the test of time.
“The more AI becomes capable of handling various tasks, the more opportunities it will give everyone to seriously consider what it truly means to ‘create.’ I think that’s a very good thing,” he said. “I don’t know how far AI will evolve, or if the day will come when it can do everything, including ‘creating,’ but at this point, I think there is still plenty we can do.”
The gaming industry has offered a wide range of takes on generative AI and its role in the future of game creation. Some companies, such as Sony and Epic, are fully committed to AI. Others believe it’s more important than ever for human creators to emerge in a sea of “AI slop.”
