A24’s Elden Ring adaptation is reportedly its most expensive film to date, with a nearly $200 million budget and a planned 2028 release. A24’s previous most expensive release was Marty Supreme, with a budget of around $70 million, which surpassed the previous leader, Civil War, with a budget of about $50 million.
The relatively new FromSoftware franchise is seeing a quick turnaround in its screen adaptation. The game launched in February 2022 and features world-building courtesy of George R. R. Martin. To date, the game has sold over 36 million copies across Steam, PlayStation, and XBOX, and it’s known for its challenging gameplay.
A24’s Elden Ring Film Is Set for 2028 Release

The movie has a March 3, 2028 release date, and a new Wall Street Journal report says it will cost around $200 million to make. The report highlighted how A24 has become a major player in the film industry, with many now trying to copy its formula.
Major studios, meanwhile, are increasingly trying to copy the A24 playbook. Online horror properties that seem like they could become the next “Backrooms” have sparked multimillion-dollar bidding wars. Universal is backing a big-budget movie from the “Everything Everywhere” directors. “They’re a Goldilocks company. Just the right amount of people doing just the right amount of things,” said Julie Huntsinger, the Telluride director.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alex Garland will write and direct the movie, the same person who wrote and directed Civil War. The cast includes Kit Connor, Tom Burke, Rose Liu, and Nick Offerman, among others. The film is also expected to take about 100 days of principal photography.
Gaming franchises are a major trend right now, and Nick Offerman has also signed on for the upcoming 4th Sonic the Hedgehog film. Learn more about that here.
