Atari Ends VCS Support With Offline Update Planned

In a message posted on its website on October 21, 2026, Atari confirmed that it has stopped onboarding new games to the platform and will shut down the store as of February 1 of next year. It reassures current console owners that they can keep playing the games they’ve purchased.
The closing sentences eulogize the modern VCS as a console that has earned its place alongside other Atari hardware releases over the more than 50 years the business has been operating.
We have stopped onboarding new games and we will be shutting down the Atari VCS software store early next year. VCS owners will be able to purchase games through February 1, 2027.
After the store shuts down, owners will continue to be able to play the games they have purchased and downloaded to their VCS.
The Atari VCS has earned its spot alongside the many console platforms Atari has launched over the past 50-plus years. We want to thank our dedicated players and creators for bringing such great content to the VCS, and for building a vibrant community.
Thank you for playing with us.
Atari remains in business as a game publisher and a nostalgia brand that sells games, handhelds, apparel, and accessories. Atari is releasing Barbie Rewind and Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee, two of the only games coming out in November 2026 alongside Grand Theft Auto 6.
Recently, they acquired a brand that specialized in PlayStation emulation.
