Atari Acquires Studio Focused on PS1 Emulation

Atari has acquired Implicit Conversion, a studio specializing in emulating games from the 32-bit era, especially those for the original Sony PlayStation.

While this acquisition makes the existing partnership between these parties permanent under the Atari umbrella, this is not the first time Atari has worked with Implicit Conversions.

Atari Acquires Implicit Conversion to Boost Game Preservation

As noted by Bill Litshauer of Implicit Conversions, the studio had been working with Atari through Digital Eclipse on Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, Rayman, and future titles to be announced later this year. He described the relationship as though they had found their long-lost cousins.

Furthermore, they say this new relationship will bring even more retro games to modern consoles. It is also said that while they will likely expand to work on more games for Atari, their primary focus remains on developing the Pancake emulator for PS1, the Waffle emulator for PS2, and eventually turning their attention to a PS3 emulator as well.

“We believe Atari is a great fit – they share our passion, and this opens up a ton of new opportunities for us. Working extensively with Digital Eclipse on recent projects has also given us a great peek behind the curtain to see how invested Atari is in game preservation and quality, which is very important to us,” said Litshauer.

For Atari, they are excited to utilize Implicit’s proprietary Syrup engine and combine it with other tools to enable greater capabilities not only for first-party Atari properties but also for partners’ games.

“When you combine our large portfolio of owned-IP and our strong relationships with major IP holders, we have a lot of opportunity in front of us,” Atari CEO Wade Rosen said in a statement given to GamesBeat. “We look forward to working with even more owners of classic-IP to fully take advantage of these exciting technologies.”
