Resident Evil 9 Has a Third-Person Camera Because Resident Evil 7 Was “Too Scary”

Resident Evil 9 is a continuation of the recent Resident Evil era of games. We know Grace Ashcroft is a central character, but we’ve also learned from Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi that Resident Evil 7 was deemed “too scary” in first-person.

After the disappointment of Resident Evil 6, Resident Evil 7 was a breath of fresh air: A return to grounded survival horror with limited resources, fun puzzles, and a claustrophobic setting. The Baker Family more than lived up to the hype as well. However, it seems not everyone enjoyed coming face to face with the fearsome family—hence the third-person camera for Resident Evil 9.

In an interview with GamesRadar, Nakanishi discussed the need for a new third-person camera option for Resident Evil 9:

“Looking back at Resident Evil 7’s first person perspective, I implemented that as a way to make it more immersive and more scary than ever before, which I think most you know media and players agreed it was an incredibly scary game, but it was possibly too scary.

I think some people couldn’t handle it, and either couldn’t finish or didn’t even start it. And that’s something that I look back on thinking that, you know, I want to make sure that people can enjoy this game. So if you started the game off in first person perspective, and you’re finding it’s too much, then third person is almost a way to step slightly back from that level of horror and make it slightly easier to deal with by having the character on screen as a kind of Avatar of yourself.”

To be fair, Jack Baker smashing his way through the walls of the Baker house and chasing after me was utterly horrifying. Let’s not even discuss the giant baby fetus monster from Resident Evil 8 Village!

Resident Evil 9 offers both a first-person and third-person perspective. If you enjoy the horror up close and personal (like me), then you can still utilize first-person. If you need to tone down the emotional trauma, then a third-person camera might be the way forward.

  • Yeah no it’s a creative decision or to get back to the character driven narrative. Haunting Grounds was their best horror title but they’ll never go back to that given its offensive and those assets are why it was good.
