PS5 Pro To Receive AMD’s FSR 4 Tech Next Year

The PS5’s lead architect has revealed that the PS5 Pro is set to receive AMD’s advanced upscaling technology next year.

The PS5 Pro was released with PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), a proprietary AI-based upscaling technology developed by Sony. The new upgrade, which is planned for PS5 Pro consoles in 2026, will work as “a drop-in replacement for the current PSSR.”

PS5 Pro Upscaling Upgrade Arriving in 2026

PS5 Pro Console video game hardware sales november

In a new interview with Tom’s Guide, Mark Cerny discussed the graphics upgrades coming to the PS5 Pro, thanks to their collaboration with AMD on Project Amethyst. Cerny revealed that progress on new upscaling technology has been “faster than expected”, as the partnership between AMD and PlayStation is helping speed up the process.

Cerny reveals that the algorithm Project Amethyst has come up with can be “implemented on current-generation hardware.” The co-developed algorithm has already been released on PC by AMD as FSR 4. PlayStation is “in the process of implementing it on PS5, and it will release next year on PS5 Pro.” Cerny added that the PS5 Pro will not receive “a cut-down [version] of the algorithm” and it will be a “full-fat version of the co-developed super resolution.”

Cerny explained that this partnership with AMD is “not for proprietary technology”; the companies are instead “really trying to move the industry forward”. Cerny wants to use these technologies on consoles, but they are also “available to any of AMD’s customers freely”. The lead architect concluded that AMD is moving very fast, but his “time frame is multi-year here”, as he is preparing for the next generation of consoles.

In other news, PlayStation has no plans for first-party games on PS Plus. What are your thoughts on PS5 and PS5 Pro receiving AMD’s FSR tech soon? Let us know below and join the official Insider Gaming forums discussion.
