PlayStation Has No Plans For Day One First Party Games On PS Plus

PlayStation has no plans to offer first party games to PlayStation Plus (PS Plus) subscribers on day one.

In a recent interview with Game File’s Stephen Totilo, PlayStation vice president of global services Nick Maguire talked about the company’s strategy for the service. To Sony, the current policy of waiting at least a year to add first-party PlayStation games to PS Plus was going well.

“We’ve sort of stayed true to our strategy across the board, where we’re not looking to put games in day and date,” Maguire told Totilo.

Instead of first-party games, PlayStation prefers to go down the indie and third-party route regarding what to offer subscribers. Maguire says that using those games to “compliment” the current strategy for PlayStation’s first-party titles is “working really well across the platform.”

That number could even jump to more than the five games if there’s something out there that PlayStation feels is worth adding.

“If there were six or seven great opportunities, then we would go for them as well,” Maguire said.

Some of those games that have released day one on the service include the recently launched FBC: Firebreak from Remedy Entertainment, Lost Records: Bloom and Rage (both episodes), Animal Well, Sea of Stars, and more.

When asked if a day one launch of various first-party games such as Concord could have helped them stick around, Maguire declined to answer. Instead, per Totilo, Maguire said that he believes PS Plus has “proven itself to be a great way to introduce new players to franchises.”

“So I think there’s always going to be a moment for any game where there’s the right time for it to go into Plus, when it’s ready to reach a wider audience or…to find new fans or new parts of our platform that it hasn’t already reached,” Maguire said.

Do you think Sony should change their policy and put more first-party PlayStation games on PS Plus day one? Let us know down below, and join the discussion in the official Insider Gaming forums.
