Activision is Taking Down 10 Call of Duty Games Today For a Mysterious Update

Activision has announced a maintenance window that will take ten Call of Duty games offline today for a few hours, and nobody knows why. The list of games is expansive and includes games as far back as 2009’s Modern Warfare 2. It was stressed by the team that the maintenance window will last four hours, and while it’s ongoing, you won’t be able to play these games.

Some have theorised it’s something linked to anti-cheat, while others believe it’s in preparation for a mass addition to the Game Pass subscription service, which recently saw COD: WWII added to the list.

COD Maintenance Times

From 3 AM – 7 AM PT (6 AM – 10 AM ET), the following ten Call of Duty games will be taken offline for maintenance:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II
  • Call of Duty: World War II
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Nobody has any idea why Activision’s studios are taking these games offline, but a four-hour maintenance window is no small thing. At most, updates take a few seconds to install for these older titles. In this four-hour window, anything could be happening.

It hasn’t been made clear in the post, but it’s assumed that the games will be taken offline across all platforms.

Most likely, this is something tied to anti-cheat mechanics. It’s no big secret that Call of Duty’s older titles have been plagued for the longest time, and if Activision wants them to be playable when they’re inevitably added to Game Pass, it’ll need to bolster the anti-cheat mechanics featured in these games.

However, it’s fairly obvious that some games are missing from the list, and it’s also unclear why. For instance, 2020’s Cold War and 2021’s COD Vanguard are absent from the maintenance window.

Could we be about to see ten Call of Duty games added to Game Pass in one sweep?
