Bobby Kotick has stated in the past that he was going to hire Phil Spencer as his successor at Activision.
Phil Spencer was one of the most prominent figures associated with Xbox before his retirement, having led the company’s gaming division for the past 12 years. However, his career path could have taken a slightly different direction, as Kotick nearly got Spencer to lead Activision instead of Xbox. The statements from Kotick come from an old interview where he also spoke about the studio he regrets acquiring at Actvision.
Activision Could Have Been Led by Phil Spencer
A post by Idle Sloth on X (formerly Twitter) has brought attention to a recently resurfaced interview from the Kleiner Perkins YouTube channel, in which Bobby Kotick discusses Phil Spencer almost becoming his successor. In February, Kotick appeared on the Grit Podcast, where he talked about hiring Spencer to oversee one of his businesses. However, Spencer later called Kotick to inform him that he had just received an offer to become “the head of Xbox.”
Kotick replied to Spencer, stating that he would’ve loved to have him work at his company; however, he understood that was his dream job and asked him to go for it. Right after, Kotick also stated that he “was ready to hire him to come probably be my successor”. Kotick added that having Spencer at XBOX also helped the deal, stating, “I knew the guy, like, the guy, and I thought he’d be a good steward, really good steward for the business for the future.”
