In a move to align with the European Union’s policy, Nintendo will release a version of the Switch 2 that allows users to replace the battery easily.
The Switch 2 has recently received a major update introducing the Handheld Mode Boost feature, enhancing game performance on the console. Now, Nintendo is developing a new version of its flagship console to comply with the European Union’s 2023 policy on handheld consoles.
Switch 2 to Follow ‘Right to Repair’ Policy With Replaceable Battery Version
According to a new report by Nikkei, Nintendo is complying with the European Union’s “right to repair” policy to help make its console less impactful on the environment. To do this, the manufacturer will have to change the console’s specifications to provide the buyers with a way to replace the Switch 2’s battery with ease. The same version could arrive in Japan and the United States as well if there is an increase in right to repair awareness in those regions.
In 2023, the European Union announced a new regulation requiring all handheld consoles to feature replaceable batteries by 2027. This regulation would not have impacted Nintendo’s previous console; however, their current-generation console is expected to remain on the market beyond 2027 and will need to comply with this new policy. As a result, the original Switch may be discontinued in the EU by that time unless a version with replaceable batteries is released. Players should wait for an official announcement for confirmation.
In other news, THQ Nordic has announced that it’s bringing several games to the Nintendo Switch family of consoles. Additionally, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade’s director has stated that the Switch 2 edition is not a port of the PS4 version.
