The director of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade has confirmed that the Switch 2 edition is a port of the PS5 version, not the PS4 version.
Square Enix‘s first part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series has released for the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series consoles, and players have been comparing the Switch 2 edition. Some were speculating that the devs could be using the PS4 version for the Switch 2 port, but the director has revealed that wasn’t the case.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade Switch 2 Edition is a Port of the PS5 Version
During a new interview with Automaton, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that the Switch 2 edition was not a port of the PS4 version. Hamaguchi first spoke about some comments suggesting the port should’ve been simple because of the PS4 version, but that’s not the case, as the port is based on the PS5 version.
The director explained that after the PS4 version was released, a new version called Intergrade was released for the PS5 with enhanced game assets and that’s what was ported over to Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S. With the Series S, the developers faced memory constraints, whereas the Switch 2 faced performance constraints in handheld mode, but the engineers were able to tune the game to achieve a stable 30 fps on both platforms.
Hamaguchi also explained why Cloud’s hair on the Switch 2 edition of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade looks different from other platforms. The director explained that the game uses TAA (temporal anti-aliasing) to prevent character outlines from becoming jagged. However, the Switch 2’s handheld mode comes with some constraints that require the game to drop its internal resolution, making TAA less stable and the hair look more frizzy as jagged edges become more noticeable.
In other news, the series director has stated that there will be no compromise on the graphics for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 due to the multiplatform release. Additionally, the release dates for Switch 2 and Xbox versions of FF7 Rebirth have been revealed. What are your thoughts on Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on Switch 2 not being a PS4 port?
