Nintendo Software Sales Are Becoming Increasingly Digital

The shift towards a digital future in gaming has been a major talking point in recent weeks, and Nintendo’s latest financial results suggest the company isn’t immune to the trend. New sales data reveals that digital purchases are becoming increasingly common across the Nintendo Switch ecosystem, with more than 60% of software sales now coming through digital channels.

With Sony set to move away from physical discs from 2028 and Xbox reportedly exploring a disc-to-digital service of its own, many have viewed Nintendo as one of the last major players likely to continue supporting physical media. However, with digital sales continuing to grow across its platforms, even Nintendo could be enveloped in a digital future.

Over 60% Of Nintendo Software Sales Are Digital

Nintendo’s August 6 Financial Earnings Report revealed that the Switch 2 has now sold more than 23 million units, while the wider Switch ecosystem continues to boast around 130 million annual playing users.

With such a huge player base, it’s perhaps unsurprising that digital purchases are becoming increasingly significant for Nintendo. The company reported that 61.5% of its software sales during the first quarter of FY27 were digital, representing a 2.2 percentage-point increase from the previous quarter, which recorded a digital sales rate of 59.3%.

While the percentage increase may appear relatively modest, the actual value of Nintendo’s digital sales nearly doubled quarter-on-quarter. Digital sales reached ¥132.7 billion during the latest quarter, compared to ¥69.8 billion in the previous quarter, representing an increase of around 90%.

Nintendo attributed the year-on-year increase to several factors, including stronger sales of downloadable versions of packaged software, as well as the depreciation of the Japanese yen.

As for the games driving Nintendo’s software performance, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has proven to be a major success, surpassing 8 million units sold as of August 5, 2026. Meanwhile, Pokopia has already made history for Nintendo, becoming the best-selling Pokémon spin-off game ever.

With digital sales continuing to grow across the Switch ecosystem, Nintendo may still be committed to physical releases for the foreseeable future, but the latest figures make it clear that its audience is increasingly embracing digital software.
