Sony Finally Addresses Fan Backlash Towards Ending PlayStation Discs

Sony has finally addressed the growing fan backlash surrounding its decision to stop manufacturing PlayStation game discs from January 2028, making it clear that the company has no plans to reverse course despite “strong views” from its user base.

The controversial decision was announced earlier this month alongside news that select PlayStation Storefronts would also be closing in the near future. Unsurprisingly, the announcement hasn’t gone down well with physical media fans, with many signing a petition dubbed “Don’t Kill The Disc” in an attempt to convince Sony to reconsider.

Following the announcement, PlayStation’s social media accounts were met with a flood of negative responses, with the company’s official accounts largely remaining silent on the matter. Now, almost a month later, Sony has finally broken its silence.

Sony Settled On Ending PlayStation Discs

Sony released its first-quarter financial results today, revealing a notable decline in PS5 sales alongside the revelation that 82% of games are now downloaded digitally. Following the results, Sony held a Q&A session with industry analysts, where it was only a matter of time before its decision to end physical game disc production was brought up.

Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao was asked about the decision and responded through a live interpreter, first pointing out that Sony had announced the change roughly one-and-a-half years in advance.

Tao explained that there were “various reasons” behind the decision, but the biggest factor was the continued progression of digitalisation across the entertainment industry. According to Sony, this isn’t something unique to PlayStation, with digital distribution continuing to grow across various forms of content and media.

Ultimately, Sony has decided to stop manufacturing game discs and will “cautiously move this forward.”

The CFO also briefly acknowledged the backlash from PlayStation fans, noting that Sony has received “various opinions” and that “people have strong views” on the decision. However, rather than suggesting that the company is reconsidering, Tao concluded by stating that Sony needs to continue exploring how it can engage with consumers within a “future digital ecosystem.”

Exactly what that ecosystem will look like remains to be seen, but Sony’s response makes one thing abundantly clear: it doesn’t appear to be backing down.

With some fans already planning a PlayStation blackout in an attempt to send a message to Sony, the latest comments will likely do little to quell the frustration. If anything, they suggest that the company has already made up its mind, leaving physical media fans with an increasingly difficult battle ahead.
