The Most-Used Pokémon in the First Pokémon Champions Tournament

The meta is quickly settling for Pokémon Champions as players reach Master Ball rank and begin to host initial online tournaments.

Two content creators, Joel ‘NinoPokeBros’ Nin and Himmyturner, hosted Pokémon Champions’ first organised online tournament as over 700 players competed in the $500 VGC event.

As many VGC players expected, Inceneroar is dominating Pokémon Champions and was the most picked Mon at the event with the only character to sport a pick rate above 50%.

With Intimidate, Parting Shot, and Fake Out, Incenoar offers so much utility plus lots of damage with moves like Flare Blitz and Darkest Lariat.

However, some of the other pick-rates may surpirse you with players adapting a wide variety of Pokémon and strategies.

The highest Pokémon pick rates for the tournament were as follows:

  • Inceneroar — 53.76%
  • Sneasler — 36.8%
  • Sinistcha — 36.3%
  • Garchomp — 32.3%
  • Basculegion — 24%
  • King Gambit — 22.4%
  • Pelipper — 21.8%
  • Whimsicott — 20.3%
  • Charizard — 16.7%
  • Archaludon — 16.5%
  • Tyranitar — 16.5%
  • Dragonite — 16.4%
  • Farigiraf — 13.9%
  • Gengar — 12.8%
  • Froslass — 11.8%
  • Wash Rotom — 11.8%
  • Floette — 11.3%
  • Maushold — 10%
  • Excadrill — 9.6%
  • Venusaur — 8.8%
  • Gardevoir — 8.3%
  • Milotic — 7.7%
  • Palagin — 7.3%
  • Corviknight — 7.1%
  • Talonflame — 7.1%
  • Clefable — 6.8%
  • Gyarados — 5.8%
  • Primarina — 5.6%
  • Hisuian Arcanine — 5.5%
  • Torkoal — 4.9%
  • Kommo-o — 4.7%
  • Alolan Ninetales — 4.5%
  • Dragapult — 4.3%
  • Kangaskhan — 4.1%
  • Glimmora — 4.1%
  • Hydreigon — 4%
  • Politoed — 4%

Surprisingly, Floette was relatively low on the list at only 11.3% pick rate, despite many members of the community claiming it is the strongest Mega Evolution currently in the game.

However, this could partially be down to ownership as Floette is one of the few Pokémon that cannot be recruited. Players need to own and have completed Pokémon Legends Z-A in order to get the Mega.

Yet, it certainly impacted the meta as it’s part of the reason Poison Type Sneasler is the second most-picked. With great type coverage and high damage, Sneasler has become a high-priority pick for a lot of Pokémon Champions players.

The Winning Team

And in another surprise, the winning team used a Mega Evolution that didn’t even appear in the most popular picks.

Ursaking opted for the new Mega Delphox from Legends Z-A, and it paid off with a defensive set utilising Substitute.

Though the player also brought Mega Dragonite solely to counter Charizard Sun teams. Though they admitted Dragonite could replace Haze with Low Kick for more type coverage.
