I think I speak for everyone when I say how frustrating it’s been for years that 2XP Tokens still tick down when you’re not in a match. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is trying to cater to the community more than ever, so making Double XP Tokens no longer count down in real time is a huge win.
There’s almost a reluctance to use 2XP Tokens at times because you never know what will happen. Internet issues, called away for an errand, Amazon turns up with a parcel, anything where you’re NOT in a lobby wastes precious Double XP Token time. Not anymore in Modern Warfare 4.
Double XP Tokens Use In-Game Time And Carry Over in MW4
Two major details about 2XP Tokens in Modern Warfare 4 have emerged. Firstly, any tokens you have in Black Ops 7 will carry over to MW4. If you’re currently playing BO7, don’t feel pressured to use any 2XP Tokens you have if you’re planning to buy Modern Warfare 4.
This is handy, but not as handy as the game-changing announcement that: ‘Tokens will count down in game time.’ This means that if you activate a 30-minute 2XP Token, it will only trigger when a match starts, and if the game wraps up before the 30 minutes are up, the Token should pause until it’s over and you’re back in the lobby.

It’s a massive quality-of-life change that shouldn’t have taken this long to be implemented, to be honest, but better late than never. Double XP Tokens are usually handed out quite regularly, though, for completing various challenges across all CoD game modes.
They usually come in the various Battle Passes as well. Hopefully, Activision doesn’t counter this change by making 2XP Tokens more scarce to obtain.
If all goes well, you should be leveling up your account and guns in no time!
