Marathon’s Development Budget is Over $200 Million, Says New Report

Marathon’s development budget was reportedly over $200 million.

Bungie’s extraction shooter has been available for just over a month and can be played on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Information regarding the game’s budget comes from a new report by Paul Tassi.

The report reveals that the game’s budget is likely over $250 million, excluding maintenance costs and upcoming content.

Marathon’s Relationship with Steam

The Forbes article also states that the majority of the game’s player base resides on Steam, with reports indicating that 70% of players are on PC. Reportedly, the average playtime on Steam was 28 hours, with 22% of players spending more than 50 hours. About 7% of players have racked up more than 100 hours.

Currently, the game has a concurrent player count of 20,306, down from its all-time peak of 88,337. This peak itself is down from 143,621 during the free server slam event. Additionally, the game is 77th in daily active Steam players as of this writing.

As for other platforms, the game is currently the 106th most-played on Xbox.

Bungie Commited to Marathon for Many Years

As concerns arise that Marathon could become yet another live-service game with a short lifespan, Bungie has stated that they plan to support the game for many years.

“We are in it for the long haul with Marathon. We look forward to many years of steady improvements to every aspect of the game. Thank you for taking this journey with us,” the development team said in a recent blog post.

Recent games like Highguard and Concord have been shut down so soon after launch that some players believe Marathon could face the same fate. However, the game is still growing, and new content and updates continue to extend its longevity.

Comments

  • Old news and the game is a flop it needed to sell close to 5 million and sold over 1. I’m shocked it did over 1 million but the PC player base has dropped its like 30k or way lower compared to its 800k install base

  • I think Sony should stop put money in this game and just give up Bungie. The game is non sense and every week is getting lower players on steam. In console is dead.
