Bungie still has big plans for Marathon, with one of the game’s developers recently stating that there are years-long plans to advance the game’s story. This comes at a time when, at least online, there is discussion about the game’s concurrent player count.
Marathon, an extraction shooter, was published by Bungie and released in March 2026. The game is playable on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. There are currently 14,375 concurrent Marathon players on Steam. Even though that’s a huge drop from its peak of 88,337 Steam players when the game first launched in March, it’s clear that the developers have long-term plans for the game.
Marathon Dev Says Story Will Evolve Over Years
During a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Marathon creative director Julia Nardin was asked how the extraction shooter genre has evolved the multiplayer gaming landscape. Nardin admitted that the team knows where they want to take the story in the near future, but they have to remain flexible because that’s part of the magic of a live-service title, allowing players’ wishes and trends to shape the game’s future.
“We know where we want to take the story over the next few years, but I don’t want to say it’s completely ‘locked in’ because it’s important to us that our players be able to help shape it.” For the studio, player input into the narrative is “part of the magic of playing a live service game.”
Furthermore, Nardin discusses the importance of players being able to jump into the game at any time. She would say that they want every season of the game to be a new entry point for players. That includes providing players with an opportunity to understand the story so far.
