Sony has released another firmware update for the PlayStation 5, introducing a handful of security fixes to the system software.
The update arrives amid a turbulent period for Sony, with jailbreak efforts on the PS5 seemingly accelerating week after week. These exploits have the potential to allow users to pirate games and modify the console, and with Grand Theft Auto 6 on the horizon, Sony may be looking to strengthen its security measures ahead of one of the biggest game launches of all time.
Sony Continues Effort To Prevent Future PlayStation Jailbreaks
The latest PlayStation 5 firmware update is version 26.07-14.22.00, weighing in at 1.267 GB. The update is available to download as of today, November 2, with the official patch notes revealing the following changes:
- We’ve made some security fixes to the system software.
While the patch notes are incredibly brief and don’t provide any specific details, the update arrives as the PS5 jailbreak scene continues to make progress. Sony is seemingly working to prevent these exploits from affecting the latest system software, particularly as some games have reportedly started requiring newer firmware versions to download updates and remain playable.
With Grand Theft Auto 6 fast approaching, the latest update has sparked speculation within the community about whether Rockstar’s upcoming blockbuster will require a specific PS5 firmware version to run. Given the interest in pirating the game, jailbreak enthusiasts could be looking to find ways around Sony’s security measures, potentially even paving the way for an early PC release through unofficial means.
Back in October, X user PlaystationSize claimed that GTA 6 would require at least PS5 Update 14.10 to function. However, following today’s firmware release, the account has since quoted its original post with another GTA 6 promotional image and the caption “14.22,” seemingly suggesting that the game may now require the latest update.
This would undoubtedly be good news for both Sony and Rockstar, as neither company will want to see GTA 6 fall victim to piracy ahead of or shortly after its launch. However, with jailbreak attempts continuing to evolve, there’s little doubt that the community will be looking to circumvent the latest security measures.
The big question now is whether Sony’s latest firmware update will be enough to keep the PS5 secure, or if we’ll see even more system software updates released in the months leading up to GTA 6’s launch.
