The Last of Us co-director Bruce Straley apologizes for naming God of War Laufey in his criticism of AAA innovation, saying the team isn’t to blame for the issues he mentioned.
In an interview with Edge Magazine, Straley called the current state of AAA video game development boring and pointed to God of War: Laufey as a game he finds visually attractive but still believes offers little innovation, using “boring” to describe AAA games overall.
“It feels like there’s no opportunity to inject fresh, innovative ideas,” he said before admitting that he has an AAA video game idea he’s been holding on to, but “will probably never make.”

Bruce Straley has since apologized. On Twitter, he said his quote was being used out of context for clickbait. He went on to clarify his feelings, saying he believes the quest for the next big games-as-a-service title and the desire to recreate Fortnite’s success have eroded the ability to innovate.
Unfortunately the platforms that need to bring stability have eroded the ability to innovate. The quest for GaaS & wanting to recreate the next Overwatch, Fortnite, Roblox, etc is not a viable strategy & frankly shows these “industry leaders” don’t know their own brand.

ANYWAY… blah blah blah. I have thoughts about what’s wrong & the possible serious harm done to our industry & how we might be able to fix it. But in trying to have a thoughtful conversation, I stuck my foot in my mouth & mentioned Laufey, and that was my mistake.
